We went to the Jarrell Plantation, which is about an hour and a half southeast of Atlanta, near Juliette, Ga. The Jarrel family owned the plantation and then donated a large portion of their land in the 60s, so that others could learn about the history of the land.

Whistlestop Cafe, Juliette, GA
This was originally a hardware store, and there is an old mill nearby, but when the mill shut down, the whole town shut down and this store sat abandoned
then the location scout for the film came here and decided it would be perfect for the movie
after filming, the director encouraged it's reopening as a real cafe and now they serve lots of fried green tomatoes. It was so cool to be there and their food was really good.
